Psychoanalyst Ms Sandbloom asks her patient Robert Blank, an elderly cop / crime novelist who lives in Baltimore, US, to keep a journal of his day to day activities. Despite the bitterness that saturates Blank’s declining years (“Old age is shameful. How could nature be so cruel with us?”), he never resolves to self-derision or self-pity. His journal eventually becomes the touching portrait of an unpredictable man who may seem cynical and indignant but is ultimately deeply humane.
